Welcome!
Today, more than 600 over-the-counter and prescription medicines contain acetaminophen – the active ingredient in TYLENOL®. For this reason, McNeil Consumer Healthcare has launched Get Relief Responsibly™, a national initiative designed to educate consumers about the appropriate use of prescription and OTC medications, particularly those containing acetaminophen, and the importance of reading and following medication labels. We have created this website to help you understand why and how to use all acetaminophen products appropriately, as well as provide tools and resources regarding the appropriate use of over-the-counter and prescription medicines. This includes expert advice on medicine safety, a list of common over-the-counter and prescription medicines that contain acetaminophen, and a tool to help you understand how to read the drug facts labels that come with all over-the-counter medications.
In Our Own Words
A message from Edwin K. Kuffner, M.D., Vice President, OTC Medical Affairs & Clinical Research for McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the makers of TYLENOL®
The health and well-being of consumers is our #1 priority. Through the Get Relief Responsibly™ initiative, McNeil Consumer Healthcare is working to help ensure that people who use TYLENOL®, and other products containing acetaminophen, use them appropriately.
The safety of TYLENOL® has been well-established for more than 50 years. However, some people accidentally exceed the recommended dose when taking multiple products at the same time, often without realizing they contain acetaminophen or by not reading and following the dosing instructions. Acetaminophen is safe when used as directed, but when taken in overdose amounts, it can cause liver damage.
For this reason, we are taking a number of steps to help people use acetaminophen appropriately – including introducing new dosing instructions for our Extra Strength TYLENOL® products. The Get Relief Responsibly™ initiative reminds you to follow these new instructions, read and follow the instructions for all medications you are taking and never take more than the recommended daily dose of acetaminophen or more than one product that contains acetaminophen at the same time.

New Dosing Instructions
The new dosing instructions reduce the maximum daily dose from 8 pills per day to 6 pills per day and change the dosing interval from every 4-6 hours to every 6 hours. These labeling changes will be consistent across all single-ingredient Extra Strength TYLENOL® products. We are working closely with other manufacturers of acetaminophen products to help ensure consistency in dosing instructions.
